"Putting a new wrinkle into New York modern
dance Currently celebrating its fifth year, Darrah Carr Dance creates a sensational and unique blend of traditional Irish step and contemporary modern dance. Renowned for integrating Irish culture within its choreography, Darrah Carr Dance blends Irish music, step dance footwork, and spatial patterns to create high energy, rhythmically based work that is accessible to a broad audience. Artistic Director Darrah Carr calls her style modERIN: a playful combination of the words modern (dance) and ERIN (a term of endearment for Ireland). Darrah Carr Dance has toured extensively, including international engagements in Dublin, Ireland (a ten performance run) and a six week tour of Japan with live music accompaniment by The Suffering Gaels. The company has performed at venues throughout the United States including Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Yard at Martha’s Vineyard, Wesleyan University (Connecticut), The Center for Performing Arts and SUNY Orange (upstate New York), The Valentine Theatre (Ohio), and the San Jose Fleadh (California). They have also appeared at the Toronto Fringe Festival. In New York City, performance highlights include: Symphony Space’s Dance Sampler, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Joyce SoHo, the annual New York City Irish Dance Festival, and guest appearances at the Skirball Center & Celebrate Brooklyn. Darrah Carr Dance recently opened its ModERIN studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn and established an educational program in order to introduce Carr’s blended style to the next generation of dancers. The ModERIN studio serves as the training ground for DCWee, a junior company now available to tour as a family program featuring six highly accomplished young performers ages 8-14 years. Darrah Carr Dance has received funding from numerous sources, including commissions from Trinity Irish Dance’s Junior Company and the One World Foundation, a fellowship from Summer Stages Dance (Massachusetts), and grants from the Davenport Fund (Connecticut) and the Manhattan Community Arts Fund (New York).
Darrah Carr Dance is on the Boutique Roster of Jodi Kaplan & Associates.
